Meaning
When knowledge reveals objects such as poison or weapons, it appears disagreeable because of bodily pain and misconceptions such as identifying the self with the body.
Explanation
The AchArya resolves a doubt
The AchArya now addresses the following doubt:
If knowledge is of the nature of bliss, why does it appear unpleasant when it reveals objects such as poison or weapons?
The cause of this apparent unpleasantness
When knowledge reveals objects such as poison or weapons, the knowledge itself does not become painful by its own nature.
The reason it appears to be associated with suffering is that the individual possesses:
- dhEhAthma-bhrama – the mistaken notion that the body is the self,
- kAma (attachment and desire), and
- the absence of the knowledge that the self belongs to and is completely dependent upon the Supreme Lord (ISvarAthmakathvagyAna-rAhithya).
Because of these defects, the objects revealed by knowledge are experienced as harmful and disagreeable. Thus, the unpleasantness is caused by these false notions and attachments, not by the intrinsic nature of knowledge itself.
