avathArikai (Introduction)
piLLai lOkAchAryar is mercifully explaining the question “Who are they?”
sUthram 41
agyarum, gyAnAdhikarum, bhakthi paravaSarum (vivaSarum).
Simple Explanation
They are the ignorant ones, the most knowledgeable ones, those who are deeply devotional.
vyAkyAnam (Commentary)
agyarum …
agyar
Those who lack the knowledge to engage in the sAdhanam (means) to attain bhagavAn. agyAnam also indicates aSakthi (inability). piLLai lOkAchAryar says subsequently in sUthram 115 “prApakAnthara parithyAgaththukku agyAna aSakthigaL anRu” (the main reason to give up other upAyams is not due to lack of knowledge or ability).
gyAnAdhikar
Though having knowledge and ability, due to realising the true knowledge about svarUpam (true nature of the self) which is bhagavath athyantha pArathanthryam (total dependence on bhagavAn), having the complete knowledge to abandon the other upAyams as they are contradictory to that true nature.
bhakthi vivaSar
Those who are unable to do anything in a proper manner, due to having very weakened faculties because of their great love towards bhagavAn.
