A doubt may arise here: Is the knowledge of all sentient beings of the same nature? AchArya answers this by explaining that the extent of knowledge differs according to the contraction (sankOcha) and expansion (asankOcha) experienced by the three classes of sentient beings.

sUthram 65

adhil silarudaiya gyAnam eppOdhum vibhuvAy irukkum; silarudaiya gyAnam eppOdhum avibhuvAy irukkum; silarudaiya gyAnam orukkAl vibhuvAy, orukkAl avibhuvAy irukkum.

Meaning

Among them, the knowledge of some is always vibhu (fully expanded); the knowledge of some is always avibhu (contracted); and the knowledge of others is at one time avibhu and at another time vibhu.

Explanation

Knowledge of the nithya sUris

The knowledge of the nithyasUris is always vibhu.

As stated in “அயர்வறும் அமரர்கள்“ (thiruvAimozhi 1.1.1 ‘ayarvaRum amarargaL’), they never experience contraction in their knowledge of bhagavAn. They constantly experience His svarUpa, rUpa, guNa, and vibhUthi. Therefore, their knowledge always remains fully expanded.

Knowledge of the badhdha jIvas

The knowledge of badhdha jIvas is always avibhu.

As described by “பொய்ந்நின்ற ஞானமும் பொல்லாவொழுக்கும் அழுக்குடம்பும்“ (thiruviruththam 1’poy ninRa gyAnamum pollA ozhukkum azhukkudambum’), their knowledge undergoes contraction and expansion according to their karma. Consequently, it never becomes fully expanded while they remain in samsAram.

Knowledge of the muktha jIvas

The knowledge of muktha jIvas is avibhu before liberation and vibhu after liberation.

As indicated by “கரைகண்டோர்“ (thiruAimozhi 8.3.10 “karaikaNdOr”), having crossed the ocean of samsAram through bhagavAn’s grace, they attain the liberated state. Their knowledge, which was contracted in the previous state, becomes fully expanded, as declared by the Sruthi –

“सर्वं ह पश्यः पश्यति“ (sarvam ha paSya: paSyathi).

“The seer sees everything indeed.”

Thus, before liberation their knowledge is avibhu, and after liberation it is vibhu.
