13. kurugUr nambi
kurugUr (thirukurugUr), is the birthplace of nammAzhwAr.
The greatness of that kshEthram was seen previously. nambi means one who possesses guNa pUrthi, that is, completeness in all auspicious qualities. Generally, bhagavAn is referred to as nambi because bhagavAn possesses many auspicious qualities in fullness. Some of the auspicious qualities are gyAna (knowledge), bala (ability to support), aiSwarya (control), vIrya (no change to self), Sakthi (strength), thEjas (radiance), vAthsalyam (motherly forbearance), swAmithvam (lordship), sauSeelyam (simplicity), saulabhyam (easy approachability), etc. Names such as thirukkuRungudi nambi and thirunaRaiyUr nambi are names of bhagavAn.
In the case of AzhwAr too, he is complete in auspicious qualities. These include gnAnam, bhakthi, vairAgyam, and Athma guNams, namely noble qualities such as ananyArha SEshathvam (exclusive servitude towards bhagavAn), ananya SaraNathvam (having bhagavAn as the exclusive refuge), and ananya bhOgyathvam (enjoying bhagavAn alone). He is surrendered to bhagavAn, enjoyable to bhagavAn etc. These qualities are present in fullness in AzhwAr. Hence, he is named nambi.
Even though bhagavAn bears the name nambi, AchAryas were also called as nambi. Among the AchAryas, nammAzhwAr was the first to be known as nambi. In kaNNinuN chiRuth thAmbu, madhurakavi AzhwAr referred to nammAzhwAr as kurugUr nambi.
14. gyAnath thamizhk kadal
This is a thamizh name.
The meaning of gyAnath thamizh arasu has been explained previously. Here, the reference to gyAnath thamizh is the same. gyAnath thamizh means vEdham in the thamizh language.
nammAzhwAr has presented vEdham in thamizh. The essence of vEdham is found in thirumanthram (ashtAksharam). The essence of ashtAksharam is artha panchakam, namely: the true nature of the supreme lord SrIman nArAyaNan (paramAthma svarUpam), the true nature of the eternal jIvAthmA (jIvAthma svarUpam), the true nature of the most fitting means (upAya svarUpam), the true nature of the obstacles in the form of infinite karma (virOdhi svarUpam), and the true nature of the ultimate goal (upEya svarUpam). All of these were presented by nammAzhwAr in his dhivya prabandhams, especially in thiruvAimozhi.
kadal means ocean. Hence, AzhwAr is referred to as gyAnath thamizhk kadal, the ocean of the divine vEdham in the thamizh language.
Sriman nAthamunigaL, in the thaniyan for thiruvAimozhi, declares thiruvAimozhi to be dhrAvida vEdha sAgaram, that is, an ocean of thamizh vEdha. The same can be said of nammAzhwAr as well.
nammAzhwAr is the original source of thiruvAimozhi. Hence, he can also be called dhrAvida vEdha sAgaram (g.yAnath thamizhk kadal).
