Explanation:

Definition of nirvikArathva

The term nirvikArathva refers to the state of being without modification or change (achidh-vath-vikArathva). It signifies an eternal and immutable nature, free from transformation.

The eternal nature of the self

  • nirvikArathva emphasises that the self (AthmA) is eternal and unchanging.
  • This attribute aligns the self with the imperishable brahman, highlighting its immutable essence.

Scriptural support for nirvikArathva

  1. “amruthAksharam hara:” (अमृताक्षरं हरः) [SvEthASvathara upanishadh]
    • This statement declares brahman’s imperishable and eternal nature.
  2. “AthmaSudhdha: akshara:” (आत्मशुद्धः अक्षरः)
    • Here, the term akshara denotes that the self is unchanging, pure, and eternal.

The term akshara specifically conveys the idea of something that neither perishes nor undergoes transformation.

The self as immutable

  • In line with this understanding, the self is described as remaining eternally pure and unaltered, without undergoing any modification or change.
  • The teacher of the gIthOpanishadh, krishNa, affirms this truth by stating: अविकारोऽयम् (avikArO’yam) – “This self is unchanging” [SrI bhagavath gIthA 2.25]

This reinforces the profound nature of nirvikArathva as a core attribute of the self.
