sUthram 20

நிரவயவமாகையாவது அவயவஸமுதாயமன்றிக்கேயிருக்கை

(niravayavamAgaiyAvadhu avayava samudhAyam anRikkE irukkai)

Meaning: Being partless means that the soul is not an aggregate of parts.

Explanation

The soul is described in the śāstras as:

विज्ञानमयः (vigyAnamaya:) – “of the nature of knowledge” [thaiththirIya upanishadh]

and

विज्ञानघनः (vigyAnaghana:) – “a compact mass of knowledge” [bruhadhAraNyaka upanishadh]

Because the soul is of the nature of consciousness, it is not a collection of parts like insentient objects (achith vasthu-s). Material objects are made up of components, but the soul is not such an aggregate.

Therefore, the soul is said to be niravayava – partless.
